This instrument is designed to help students understand free-fall, namely by measuring the time a steel ball falls, checking the relationship between height and time taken, and measuring the acceleration of free fall.
The use of a time counter makes it possible to measure the free fall time to an accuracy of 100 µs divisions. The free fall time is measured with two optical gate sensors. When the ball is released, the time counter automatically starts counting down. The timer counter will read the time the ball passes from the magnetic holder through each sensor of the optical gate. When the ball passes the second optical gate sensor, the timer counter will automatically stop measuring.
